Johnson family papers, 1839-1954.

Extensive family histories and mementoes of Johnson, wife Stella White Johnson (1858-1925), their children Nellie, Florence, Edith and Ralph, and families; correspondence relating to daughter Florence's application for Daughters of American Revolution membership, and clippings. A copy of daughter Edith Johnson Skulason's "Memoirs of early days in Nelson County, mainly concerning the M.N. Johnson family" (10 leaves) is included. Other material on Johnson's parents, Nelson and Anna Selheim Johnson, and brother, Lewis C. Johnson of Fargo are included. Correspondence regarding Lewis' daughter Ina, her dismissal from teaching in Fargo public schools and fight for reinstatement (1941-1954), and daughter Virna. Family material includes Houghton, Jepson, and White family genealogies, the latter containing correspondence. Includes a copy (1847) of "Constitution and officers of the Houghton Association with the proceedings of the Houghton meeting held at Worcester, Massachusetts, March 3, 1847" and a copy of Old Muskego saga (June 1940), a periodical relating the history of North Cape Lutheran Church, North Cape, Wis.

Johnson, Martin N. (Martin Nelson), 1850-1909

Martin N. Johnson was born in 1850 at Norway, Wisconsin. After his education he established a law practice with his brother Lewis at Decorah, Iowa. In 1883 Martin and Stella Johnson and his brother Lewis and family homesteaded near present Petersburg, N.D. He was a member of the North Dakota Constitutional Convention in 1889. From 1891 to 1899 he was U.S. Congressman from North Dakota and in 1908 was elected to the U.S. Senate. He died in office on Oct. 21, 1909. From the description...
